Day 3, Monday 1 January 2007

Score 1 (Tullysaran) Maurice Rooney & Micheal O'Neill v Mickey Quigley & Sé Mullan (Tieve Tara)

Monday morning dawned alot calmer then the previous day and throwers Rooney and Quigley had the honour of bowling the first competitive bowls of the year for the Tullysaran and Tieve Tara clubs respectively. Alot was at stake in the first score as Tullysaran only needed one more win to retain the Wolly Toms cup for another year and indeed for Rooney and young Micheal O'Neill it proved to be extremly difficult to stay in touch of the stronger pairing of Quigley and Mullan. But they fought gamely onwards and with about a quarter of the score remaining, they got their rewards as O'Neill bowled accurately to allow the Tullysaran men to take the lead for the first time in the score. Quigley was not to be out done however and with his last throw, he expertly spun the bowl over the line and round the corner out of site leaving Rooney no chance with his throw. The win for Tieve Tara brought them to within 1 win of the visitors and 2 of the cup with the scores reading Tullysaran 4 - 3 Tieve Tara.

Score 2 (Tullysaran) Philip Corrigan & Saran Daly v Adrian O'Reilly & Rory O'Reilly (Tieve Tara)

With Tieve Tara needing to win the 2 remaining scores, they got of to just the start they needed by going almost a bowl up early and only the galant efforts of Saran Daly keeping the Tullysaran men in touch and Corrigan finding out the honeymoon period was well and truly over. With 14 year old Saran the most impressive bowler on show in this the second score, he showed what a great talent he is for the furure with a mighty shot from the concrete to the cattle grids. This caused great shakes throughout the crowd and in turn spurred Corrigan into life and increased the now mounting pressure on the O'Reilly brothers. And when Corrigan bowled a great shot round the well corner and half way along the straight, the O'Reillys lost all fight and the Tullysaran men roared home to win by a shot and win the Cup for the second year running.

Score 3 (Tullysaran) Martin Rooney v Paul Mackle (Tieve Tara)

With the scores now at 5-3 in favour of Tullysaran and little else to fight for but pride, the pressure was some what lifted from Martin Rooneys shoulders and indeed this was evident from his start where he lacked concentration and accuracy. To compound his bad start, his opponent, Paul Mackle, lacked nither and flew out of the blocks and into a great lead. However, after a miss from Mackle at the well corner, the door was opened again for Rooney who took full advantage and bowled 4 massive throws from just round the well corner to the Coal Sheds leaving Mackle in his wake, shell shocked and 2 shots adrift. With Rooney not relenting, Mackle conceeded the half way down the hill to leave the men from Tullysaran with another win and the overal score at Tullysaran 6 - 3 Tieve Tara.

It was a very impressive display of bowling by the visitors against a very strong Tieve Tara team over one of the finest bowling courses in Armagh, and perhaps in Ireland. Hearty congratulations were deserved by all Tullysaran throwers and also to their sproting opponents, and as usual, a great weekends bowling, friendship and craic was had by all. The Wolly Toms cup was presented to young Saran Daly, the hero of the day and by far the thrower of the competition, by Paul Donnelly, the owner of Wolly Toms Lounge and proud sponsor of the Wolly Toms cup at a very lively presentation on New Years night in Wolly Toms Lounge. Day 2, Sunday December 31 2006

Score 1 (Tullysaran) Danny Trainor & Shane O'Neill v Paddy O'Neill & Oliver O'Neill (Tieve Tara)

Danny Trainor and the young Shane O'Neill were up against the very experienced O'Neill brothers in the first score on New Years Eve morning where Tullysaran were hoping to overturn the one score deficit from yesterday. The early exchanges of the score went to the Tullysaran pair and at Starrs they had the borthers in alot of trouble. However, the 'saran men relaxed a little too much and allowed the Tieve Tara men back into the score and it was level pegging at the Coal Sheds. With only 2 shots left, young Shane O'Neill put the visitors within sight of the line and with Paddy O'Neills bowl crossing to the lane well short of the line, Trainor held his nerve and scored the line to get the Tullysaran men off to a winning start for the day and also levelling up the competition at 2 scores each.

Score 2 (Tullysaran) Connor O'Neill & Paddy O'Neill v Mark McParland & Declan Toal (Tieve Tara)

The uncle and nephew combination of Paddy and Connor O'Neill led the line for Tullysaran back in the road in the second score of the day and raced into an early lead aided by some erratic bowling from the home pairing of McParland and Toal. The lead reached a massive 2 bowls at one stage and the O'Neills looked to be cruising, but in the atrocious weather conditions mistakes were inevitable and 2 misplayed shots at the well corner reduced the lead by a shot and further mistakes followed, but the Tullysaran men were saved by the line and held on to win by the narrowest of margins. The score now read Tullysaran 3 - 2 Tieve Tara.

Score 3 (Tullysaran) Connor McGuigan v Brian O'Reilly (Tieve Tara)

The third score of the day saw probably the most eagerly awaited socre of the weekend, with senior thrower McGuigan coming up against intermediate thrower, Brian O'Reilly. And it was the more junior thrower, O'Reilly who was fasted out of the blocks going nearly a bowl up around Gus's. McGuigan however was not to be out done and had the score levelled by the well corner. And now with the bit between his teeth, the Tullysaran man forged ahead strongly and found himself 2 shots to the good. With the weather conditions now extreamly windy, the standard of the throwing slipped somewhat but McGuigan had done enough to win the score and in turn help the Tullysaran men to a whitewash for the day and hold a 4 - 2 lead going into the third and final days bowling and needing only 1 more score to clinch cup for the second year running.

Wolly Toms Cup - Day 1

Over the three days from December 30 2006 until Janurary 1 2007, the bowling clubs of Tullysaran and Tieve Tara competed in the annual Wolly Toms Cup over the Tieve Tara Course. A total of 9 scores took place over the 3 days with some exceptional displays of bowling from both sides ensuring that competition has lived up to its reputation of being the must see christmas/new year tournament. Despite the cold, rain and the gales, good crowds braved the elements on all 3 days to watch the spectacle.

Day 1, Saturday 30 December 2006
Score 1 (Tullysaran) Malachy O'Neill & Mickey McVeigh v Paul McCann & Paul Mullan (Tieve Tara)

An out of sorts start by the Tullysaran men handed an early advantage to McCann and Mullan who grasped the opportunity with both hands and raced clear into a commanding lead. With such a big lead, the Tieve Tara men were able to relax and bowl well within themselves and, despite the the efforts of the visitors, they ran out easy winners.

Score 2 (Tullysaran) Anthony Rooney & Stephen O'Neill v Gerard McKee & Seamus O'Neill (Tieve Tara)

In the second score of the day, back in the road, Tullysaran managed to hit back from the early loss of the first score to record their first win in this years competition. An impressive display of bowling from the Rooney/O'Neill partnership ensured the Tullysaran men never looked anything other that easy winners, levelling the competition at one score a piece.

Score 3 (Tullysaran) Frank Donnelly v Mickey Mallon (Tieve Tara)

In the final score of the first day, Frank Donnelly was pitted against Mickey Mallon, and it was the Tieve Tara man who started flawlessly leaving "Big Frank" in his wake and struggling. A few missed played shots by Mallon towards the home straight ensured that Donnallys efforts were not in vain as the score drifted towards a nail bitting, last shot finish. With the Tullysaran man throwing first, he bowled well to below Doyles lane leaving Mallon with not much to beat, but Mallon let his bowl drift to the wrong side of the road and into the stones behind the mark, but much to his and his supporters relief, the bowl reappeared on the road and had enough steam left to pass the mark, winning the score and leaving the Tieve Tara men winning 2 - 1 after the frist days bowling.

John Grimley v Shane Gribben:

Gribben started well and built a useful lead over his first couple of shots. Grimley was fortunate to rub before the bridge to keep the score level. There wasn’t much separating the pair round the cap, but a brilliant shot from Gribben out of the cap all the way to Allen’s raised nearly a bowl of odds, which he held to the top of the hill. Gribben gained a useful lead round Mary Ann’s, but let his next over the road. He redeemed himself with a powerful last shot almost scoring the line and won by a shot.

Fergal McCreesh v Seamus Conlon:

Both throwers were past the Point Road in two shots. McCreesh’s next fell short of the corner while Conlon’s was closer to Mary Ann’s. Conlon got good odds across the straight, but a good shot from McCreesh up the hill, gave him the lead. Conlon missed his chances past Allen’s, and was a shot out at the cap. McCreesh threw two pile-drivers to finish, opening the top corner from Toby’s Lane. There was no way back for Conlon, and he finished two shots out.

Darren Donnelly v Martin McGahey:

Donnelly was fortunate to rub round the corner, leaving McGahey nearly a bowl out. McGahey responded with a big shot past O’Neill’s to almost the bridge to level the score. Donnelly still held a slender lead all the way to Mullantur. From here, McGahey threw to nearly Harney’s, and when Donnelly missed Mary Ann’s from above Kilpatrick’s, McGahey had almost a shot to spare. Donnelly threw a good shot from Mary Ann’s to the Point Road, and McGahey was fortunate to get near the mark. Donnelly scored the line well with his next, and his bullet nearly trickled all the way down the hill. McGahey replied well to nearly the mark to record a last shot win.

Daniel Trainor v Shane O’Neill snr:

Neither of the throwers started well, with both of them taking five shots to get around Mary Ann’s corner. From here, Trainor improved a little putting his next to past Kilpatrick’s and then on to near the top of the hill. O’Neill was never far away, and the lead changed hands many times over the score. A good shot by Trainor into the cap, followed by another to near the bridge, raised a shot and odds. Again Trainor failed to capitalise, and with O’Neill producing two good shots to the top corner, the lead was suddenly down to odds. A good last shot, however, sealed the victory for Trainor when O’Neill failed to score with his last.

Ronan McKenna v Martin Rooney: Rooney and McKenna both started well going across the Point Road in two each. McKenna pulled his third across the road leaving Rooney with a useful lead round Mary Ann’s. McKenna recovered with a well-played bowl to Kilpatrick’s. A big shot up the hill from Rooney coupled with McKenna not getting his bowl out from the left, gave Rooney a two-bowl lead at Mullantur. Rooney continued steady bowling to the cap leaving McKenna no chance of recovery. McKenna failed to take his chances round the corner and up the home straight, however a big shot into the last corner gave him a glimmer of hope. Rooney stood up to the challenge, getting near the line from no corner and when McKenna spun his bowl across to Knipe’s Lane, Rooney had nothing to do to beat the mark.

Cormac Conlon v Barry McKenna: A big shot from Conlon down past O’Neill’s opened an early lead of almost a bowl. An out-of-sorts McKenna failed to make any in-roads and before Mullantur, Conlon had increased the lead to nearly two. Young McKenna was slowly finding his form, and a big shot from above Kilpatrick’s opening Mary Ann’s, cut the lead to under a bowl. When Conlon’s next shot took a bad hop off a manhole cover, suddenly his lead was rather slim. A good shot from McKenna to the Point Road left the score level. McKenna put the pressure on, scoring with his last, and when Conlon fell short, hitting the dead kerb, young McKenna had timed his recovery to perfection, leading for the first time at the line.

Daniel Trainor v Colm McGahan: McGahan started the better of the two, and Trainor had to throw a big third shot to level the score at four each by Mary Ann’s. McGahan pulled away again at Kilpatrick’s and Trainor needed the breaks past Mullantur to level it again at Allen’s. A good shot by Trainor from Allen’s to the cap gave him the lead for the first time, and his next, played perfectly to the bridge, put him almost a shot in front. A couple of mistakes from McGahan at O’Neill’s put paid to his chances of recovery, and Trainor ran out a comfortable two bowl winner at the top corner.

With the non-showing of Peter Daly and Eddie Mallon, Paddy O’Neill took on Aidan Conlon in a challenge. In a score when O’Neill failed to hit the heights, Conlon belied his second grade status to run out a comfortable winner.

There was also some action earlier in the holiday week. Connor O’Neill had a narrow victory over Patrick Garvey, winning on the last shot. John Lennon bowled well on Friday evening to bear Cormac Garvey. Stephen O’Neill beat Paul Corrigan by a shot.

We would like to extend our sympathy to Marty McKinney and his family on the death of his uncle, Jim Donnelly. May he rest in peace.

Results:

Mickey Quigley v Danny Trainor: Trainor got off to a bad start while Quigley had three good shots to near Mary Ann’s. He was a shot up at the corner and increased his lead to almost two going up the hill. Trainor hit two big shots, both of which got good running, from before Mullantur to twenty yards into the cap. This, aided by a short shot from Quigley below Allen’s, saw a major change with Trainor now taking the lead. Trainor, however, didn’t push home this advantage round the corner to Toby’s, and Quigley then regained a lead of ten yards. Good throwing from Trainor up the straight should have left it a formality when he opened the top corner in three, with Quigley falling short of the corner in three. Quigley, throwing first, fell yards short of the line, but, unbelievably, Trainor slipped up and ended up short of Quigley’s mark. He made up for it, however, when his last, with the help of a fortunate rub, sailed over the top of the hill and he was relieved to see Quigley fall fifty yards short of the mark.

Results:

Anthony Rooney v Daniel Trainor:

With Kevin Daly not appearing, a speedy decision was made on the road to promote his opponent, Anthony Rooney, and throw his next round score against Daniel Trainor. Rooney’s short second shot left young Trainor with a valuable lead of almost a bowl at McKinney’s, but Rooney threw a big shot to the point of Mary Ann’s to nearly level the score. Trainor, however, was not to be denied, and used his superior speed up the hill to be nearly a bowl up after Mullantur. Rooney tried to regain the lost ground, but Trainor was still nearly a bowl up at the start of the cap. Trainor’s next, unbelievably, put the score over as a contest, when, from past Nesbitt’s lane he pulled his bowl to perfection and it sailed round the corners to almost Toby’s lane. With Rooney going nearly three shots out at this point, he decided to shake hands.

Back down the road in a hastily arranged three corner, Ronan McKenna and Paddy O’Neill got the better of Anthony Rooney and Martin Rooney and Danny Trainor and Kevin Daly.

Patrick Garvey and Michael O’Neill v Cormac Garvey and Ethan Rafferty:

The afternoon challenge was a somewhat depleted affair with the main senior protagonists not appearing. Patrick and Cormac Garvey stepped into the breach and a very tight and interesting score ensued. Some very big shots were thrown by all throwers and nothing could separate the two sides all the way to Mary Ann’s corner. Here Michael O’Neill produced a miler to almost the Point Road to help his team on the road to victory, recording a last shot win.

North American Region Championships

North American Region Championships, Saturday and Sunday August 12 & 13, 2006, Turkey Run Road, two miles north of Buckhannon, West Virginia.

The best players from the Boston, New York, and West Virginia (the three organized leagues in North America where this old sport is played) will meet for two days of one on one and doubles competition. Winners will advance this autumn across the ocean to the "2006 All Irelands," the 52nd annual World Series of Irish Road Bowling.

On August 12 and 13, the best players in North America will meet in intense competition to see who is "top gun," the fastest and most accurate bowler who will carry the North American banner to Ireland this fall. Semi finals will be held all day Saturday, Championship finals in the three grades Sunday afternoon. There will also be an open ladies competition.

New and growing in popularity in the USA, Irish Road Bowling, "The Old Game" has been played for over 300 years on country roads primarily in County Armagh and County Cork, Ireland. Older than baseball, football or golf, a 28 ounce iron and steel "bowl" about the size of a tennis ball is thrown underhand over a one or two mile country road, fewest shots to the finish wins. Good shots can travel 200 yards or more. The record in West Virginia is 422 yards on Wildcat Road, Ireland, WV.

At first an event added in 1995 to the Irish Spring Festival in Ireland, West Virginia, the Old Game is now played at 14 tournaments in ten towns in north central West Virginia. Irish troops played road bowling between battles in West Virginia during the American Civil War. Its an exciting sport anyone can easily learn but only a few play really well, perfect for the scenic country roads of West Virginia. This is the first time the North American Region Championships have been held in West Virginia, in other states all over the USA informal groups are beginning to play Irish bowling "scores." Everyone is invited to come out and learn from the best players this side of Ireland.

Results:

Maurice Rooney v Shane O’Neill jnr: Rooney started the better of the two and forged ahead to a bowl and odds of a lead at Mary Ann’s. Young O’Neill had been throwing erratically to this stage, but then settled and began to throw more consistently in the middle of the score. O’Neill had reduced the lead going into the cap and Rooney didn’t really take his chances to put the score out of O’Neill’s reach at this point. From the bridge, O’Neill produced nothing but milers and when Rooney faltered up the straight, O’Neill took the lead before the top corner. With just the last shots to throw, Rooney, throwing first, scored the line, but O’Neill held his nerve and produced another miler to well over the line for the comeback win of the competition.

Connor O’Neill v Ronan McKenna: McKenna started the steadier of the two with O’Neill getting a few nice rubs to keep him level at Toby’s. McKenna proceeded to stretch his lead past Allen’s but he couldn’t quite shake off the tenacious O’Neill. They continued in this vein until Mary Ann’s with still only yards in the butts. Out of Mary Ann’s, O’Neill played a great shot to across the Point Road, and McKenna looked to be in trouble when he didn’t reach the bus shelter. From here McKenna’s last was played very close to the dead kerb, but turned all the way and scored the line by twenty yards. O’Neill pulled his last, and when it hopped at the priests house and caught the hedge, the score was McKenna’s.

Danny Trainor v Paddy O’Neill: O’Neill started in great form with two milers to Killara Grange entrance. Trainor on the other hand was erratic early on and it took a big shot from McKinney’s piers to Mary Ann’s to keep him just a bowl out. O’Neill was in top form going past Mullantur in six, and holding on to a bowl of a lead. A comeback looked possible to Trainor at the cap, when he went from the start of the cap to the bridge in one. But O’Neill had other ideas and kept the pressure on, throwing a great shot from Mullantur Gates to past Toby’s lane, bringing the lead back to almost a bowl. Another couple of errors up the home straight put paid to Trainor’s chances, and O’Neill ran out a worthy winner by almost two bowls.

Good Luck to these three winners, Ronan McKenna, Shane O’Neill jnr and Paddy O’Neill in the play-offs.

Barry McKenna v Cathal McGrady: (Mary Ann’s Cup): Young McKenna started erratically, and when McGrady produced a big shot to well round the first corner, he found himself a shot and odds in arrears. McKenna’s improvement began when he played his first good shot past the bridge, which broke the shot, and by the end of the cap he reduced the deficit even further. Another big shot from the cap to almost Allen’s put McKenna in the lead. Although McGrady fought back with a big shot round Mary Ann’s corner, McKenna had just too much speed up the home straight, and sealed a comfortable victory.

Tullysaran Football Club and the Road Bowls Club are holding a joint presentation night in Mary Ann’s Bar on Friday 10^th June in aid of the Cormac McAnallen Trust. Tickets for this are £5 and are available from committee members. A defibrillator will be presented to the Tullysaran Clubs, and a light supper will be served on the night. In a fund raising and fun event, some ladies footballers will kick a ball, camogie players will hit a ball, and bullet throwers will throw a bullet along the usual course from the Chapel to O’Neill’s. Maurice Rooney v Martin Rooney:

It took a big fourth shot from Maurice to keep the score level early on. From this point on, Maurice’s steadier bowling was paying dividends, and he had built a useful advantage by Mullantur. He had increased this advantage to almost a bowl by Allen’s, and held the same through the cap. Martin’s last chance to make up the deficit went at the bridge when he pulled his bullet into Toby’s Lane. Two more good shots up the straight from Martin wasn’t enough as Maurice maintained the lead for a comfortable last shot win.

As there was no score back down the road, a three-cornered pairs challenge was arranged: Patrick Garvey and John McKenna v Connor O’Neill and Anthony Rooney v Danny Trainor and Ronan McKenna. Garvey and McKenna made the most of a good start, leaving their opponents toiling in their wake, going two shots clear at the bridge. It was going to take something special from their opponents to peg back this lead. Alas, it wasn’t forthcoming, with Garvey and McKenna holding on for an easy victory over O’Neill and Rooney with Trainor and McKenna bringing up the rear.

Stephen O’Neill v Maurice Rooney:

This was a very close score early on, with Rooney playing a big shot into Mary Ann’s to stay level. Still nothing separated the pair to the cap, with the lead changing hands several times. Up the finishing straight, Rooney edged ahead, and it took a kindly rub by O’Neill at the last corner to keep him in the score. O’Neill’s last was well played to past Knipe’s Lane. Rooney, however, was up to the task and played his bowl well up the centre of the road to record a narrow last shot win.

Marty Mullan v Danny Trainor:

Played in the worst of conditions on Friday evening, when the skies opened for the entire score, this proved to be another evenly balanced affair. Mullan started the better and held a useful lead at the bridge after Trainor missed at O’Neill’s. Trainor, however, played well through the cap to leave only yards in the contest. From here there wasn’t more than twenty yards separating the pair all the way to Mary Ann’s, with Trainor holding a slight lead. Mullan’s next was well played, but unluckily caught the wet grass beyond the kerbs. Trainor took advantage, playing tight up the kerbs to the Point Road. When Mullan’s next caught on the right, a relieved Trainor saw his last going perilously close to the kerb to score for another last shot win.

Daniel Trainor v Shane O’Neill jnr:

A steady start with both throwers opening Mary Ann’s in four. A poor effort by Trainor on Mullantur hill missing the corner cost him a shot. O’Neill continued to throw steadily and forged ahead taking a two shot lead by the bridge. O’Neill made a few errors up the home straight, but his superior speed saw him hold on for a comfortable two bowl win.

With no score back, Maurice Rooney took on Ronan McKenna. McKenna was a bit ring rusty early on having been off the roads for some time. By the time the pair got to beyond the cap, McKenna was starting to show his true form and bowled flawlessly to the line to record a one shot victory.

Connor O’Neill and Maurice Rooney v Patrick Garvey and Danny Trainor:

A big second shot by Rooney was cancelled out by a big third from Garvey, leaving things pretty level at Mary Ann’s, with both pairs opening the corner in three. It remained fairly level up to the cap where Garvey and Trainor built up a useful lead round the cap to O’Neill’s. A miss from Trainor levelled things again, but the next miler from Garvey nearly opened the top corner leaving them with a useful lead. Rooney’s next got a nice rub out from before the last corner to 20 yards short of the line and when Trainor failed to score, it was down to the last two throws. O’Neill unleashed a pile driver to nearly the Church. Garvey’s reply looked to be following it all the way, but an unfortunate bounce left it short of the mark.

Shane O’Neill jnr v Daniel Trainor:

In a short score to Allen’s Lane, a big second shot from young O’Neill to Paddy O’s left him with almost a shot of a lead which he didn’t relinquish to the line.

Mickey McVeigh v Malachy Quigley:

A near flawless display early on from Quigley belied his years as he raced into a bowl of a lead to Mullantur. A poor shot from McVeigh allowed Quigley to extend the lead to nearly two round Mary Ann’s corner. McVeigh, however, produced a sting in the tale when he threw a miler from the houses to nearly score the line. Quigley’s next only got the dead kerb at the Point Road, breaking the shot and his next had its fair share of luck hopping another kerb rubbing across the road and scoring the line off the wire fence, leaving Quigley a relieved last shot winner.

Stevie McGurk v Barry McKenna:

McGurk started well opening a bowl of a lead by Kilpatrick’s from an erratic McKenna. McKenna slowly found his stride, but McGurk was missing nothing at this stage and held the lead until the cap. McGurk then misplayed two in a row before the bridge, leaving the score level, and when he missed two more up the straight, McKenna sailed into a bowl of a lead which he never relinquished.

With no score back down, Danny and Daniel Trainor took on Patrick Garvey and Mickey McVeigh (with a small head start). The Trainors struggled early on, and their opponents, bowling flawlessly, raced into a two bowl lead at the cap. Some good bowling from the Trainors, coupled with a few unfortunate strokes of bad luck from their opponents, left the score level by Mary Ann’s. Two more good shots each left a grandstand finish with the Trainor partnership winning by the narrowest of margins on the last shot.

Cormac Conlon v Gerard Conlon:

Cormac was very erratic early on, and Gerard, also making a mistake or two, raised a bowl of odds out of Mary Ann’s. Cormac settled into a rhythm after this and produced some hard, straight bowls, leaving Gerard a bowl out with a big shot past Allen’s, and then two out with another at the cap. Cormac continued to forge ahead and with the deficit three bowls at O’Neill’s, Gerard decided to shake hands.

Shane Donnelly v Joseph O’Neill:

Shane Donnelly started with two milers to the slow sign against newcomer Joseph O’Neill. O’Neill had no answer to this type of bowling and he went a bowl out at Allen’s and two out at Mary Ann’s. Here it was O’Neill’s turn to throw a miler to almost the Point Road. Donnelly held on to his first out of the corner and when his next hit the dead kerb, suddenly all was to play for. Donnelly, however, got past the Point Road as a useful lead, and when O’Neill failed to score, Donnelly was relieved to see his last hop another kerb for a last shot victory.

Results:

With Kevin Daly injured, there was no tournament score up the road. A challenge score with father and son, Danny and Daniel Trainor took on brothers Martin and Anthony Rooney. The Trainor’s were on top form early on opening Mary Ann’s in three and went on to win an easy victory at the cap. The Rooney’s had their revenge, however, winning the short score from the cap to the line on the last shot.

Colm McGahan v Ciaran Mullen:

After a shaky start, Mullan produced a great third shot all the way to the bridge to get him back in the running. Generally the standard was pretty good, with the throwers matching each other all the way to Mary Ann’s. From here McGahan pulled his shot over the road, opening the door for Mullan, who took his chance with a well played bowl to the Point Road. This looked to be enough, but McGahan produced a miler from the houses, almost scoring the line. When Mullan failed to score from the Point Road, this left a last shot finish. Mullan reached the junction and failed to come off the bank, while McGahan’s bowl ran off the bank winning narrowly.

With more non-showers in the afternoon, it was left for Maurice Rooney to throw Aidan Early in an uneven affair. Rooney proved a bit strong and ran out a comfortable winner.

Eugene Donnelly v Seamus Crowe:

Donnelly proved to be the steadier of the pair. Putting his obvious experience to use, he raced into an early two bowl lead. Crowe tried hard to reduce the deficit, but couldn’t put it together on the day, leaving Donnelly to run out a comfortable winner.

Pat Hagan v Gerard Conlon:

Tournament scores were light on the ground in Tullysaran on Sunday morning with only one taking place. Pat Hagan started poorly against Gerard Conlon when a poor third shot only reached the new entrance. This put Hagan a bowl out from which he never recovered. Hagan couldn’t deal with Conlons superior speed, and Conlon increased his lead to over two bowls by O’Neill’s, where Hagan decided to shake hands.

With An Bol Fada in full swing over the Easter Holidays, a couple of challanges were all the scores that took place on Sunday morning. First up was the interesting rematch between Maurice Rooney & Paddy O'Neill who threw Anthony Rooney and Patrick Garvey. The pairs had previously locked horns a couple of weeks earlier with the latter being victorous by just a yard. After a fairly even start Garvey and Rooney began pulling away from the other two with Garvey throwing a big shot to the foot of the hill and two more put them well over the hill. Rooney and O'Niell were struggling to stay in the score with some poor throwing but fortunate touches of the verges kept them in touch. And they had a great chace to level the contest round the cap corner when first Garvey and then Rooney threw two poor throws, but with Maurice missing his throw and Paddy O' unable to beat Tobys lane, the lead remained intact along the straight and round the last corner where the score was won on the last shot with Garvey beating O'Neills mark easily.

Back down the road Cormac Garvey and Saran Daly threw Conor McGuigan and wee Mick O'Neill. McGuigan seemed all at see in the early stages and appeared to be suffering a hang over from the previous day where he held the Tullysaran flag aloft in his victory over Young Murphy from Cork in the first score in the Bol Fada. Wee Mick was not at his usual good self either and after Garvey threw a miler out of the first score, the first of 3 bowls was risen. One soon became 2 past the farm and then the third bowl of odds was risen at Mary Anns. With the last couple of throws a formality, the steady throwing of young Saran proved to be the difference as he and Garvey ran out comfortable winners.

Daniel Trainor v Malachy O’Neill: Trainor was in fine form on Sunday morning. Throwing steadily he raced into an early lead. O’Neill however, was proving to be a tenacious opponent and young Trainor had to be at his best to keep his nose in front. A bad mistake by O’Neill at the bridge round the double corner was to be his undoing as Trainor capitalised on the error and went on to run out winner by a bowl.

Matthew Trainor v Stephen McGurk: Back down the road, Matthew looked like emulating older brother Daniel, racing into a bowl of a lead with three big shots to past Toby’s Lane. McGurk however, was not going down without a fight, pressing Trainor hard in the second half of the score. Trainor made a few too many mistakes and McGurk took the lead out of Mary Ann’s corner. Three more good shots from McGurk saw him win comfortably on the last shot.

On a wet Saturday afternoon, Martin Rooney got the better of Stephen O'Neill in the Cullen Cup Final. It did not start too well for Rooney however, as after 2 throws he was only just past the Chapel gates. O'Neill failed to take advantage of this and only held a shot advantage at Mary Ann’s. With the score still level through Mullintur, Rooney played a great shot through the farm and another to the cap to leave just yards in it. O'Neill held the advantage through the bends, and up along the straight he still had 30 yards of a lead, but missing the corner in 3 from Toby’s lane proved costly, as Rooney won with a well played last shot to almost the church.

Back down the road, Maurice Rooney and Paddy O'Neill threw Anthony Rooney and Patrick Garvey in what appeared to be a very uneven score. The two first graders forged a head and were almost a full shot to the good out of the first corner. Garvey and Rooney tried their hardest to get back on level terms but were only able to level the score at Mary Ann’s. Here Garvey misplayed, giving the first graders a great chance, but Paddy O' lay behind the mark. With the two Rooney brothers going head to head, Maurice showed why Anthony is still in third grade by winning the shot by a good 40 yards, leaving the two Paddy’s to throw for the score. Garvey threw first and got half way down the hill, leaving O'Neill a tricky shot to win. His shot hit the bank and came out on to the middle of the road, but with the wet verges the bowl stopped a yard short to give the underdogs victory.

Bowling in West Virginia, USA

The first major bowling weekend of the year in Ireland, West Virginia took place last weekend (March 18-19) and was a hugh success. A massive 200+ crowd for the Saturady and over 70 on the Sunday made this their most successful weekend in their history.

The opening bowl of the weekend was thrown by Secretary of State of West Virginia, Betty Ireland, who is very interested in the heritage of the sport and the cultural aspects behind in and would like to use West Virginia's Division of Tourism to promote the sport and to help it grow.

Below is a short report of the weekends bowling.

On Sunday we had one of the best doubles matches ever in West Virginia. Con O Callaghan of Boston, current North American Region Champion Junior C (highest grade in North America) was visiting us. The Sunday two on two match, Jerod Putnam & Travis Craig versus Con O Callaghan & Shawn Stewart. Jerod, Travis and Shawn are three original founders of road bowling in West Virginia in 1995, and along with Brian Craig broke their own course record on Saturday ( 4 person teams) 30 shots, 2.2 mile road. These guys have been winning since 1995, but even though the competition getting is much better they keep winning. Con and Shawn went ahead early, then Travis and Jerod came up fast to catch up. Shawn hit a monster long shot on a downhill and thought he had won it, but still a half mile to go and once again Jerod and Travis pulled even, and for a long time as they say in Ireland, "there was nothing in it." Jerod threw a long shot that was still going too fast to take a curve onto a little bridge, and flew into a pond. Con O Callaghan throwing from slightly closer, stayed in the curve and got across the bridge. Shawn then threw a long shot across the line for the win. A wonderful match, crisp cool air, in sunshine on a beautiful country road. It was our most successful weekend yet, although that big 200 + bowler crowd Saturday was hard to manage. On Saturday we had all the regulars plus many first timers. Sunday was more the serious regular bowlers. The Sunday match was some of the best Irish road bowling West Virginia has ever seen and was decided on the very last shot across the finish line. They went over 1.7 miles in 21 shots, well under the record pace for the longer 2.2 mile full course. Many extremely long shots from all four players.

Top Twelve - Day Three, Tullysaran

Frank Donnelly v Aidan Conlon v Donal Daly:

Eglish’s Donal Daly was a shade strong for his opponents. Bowling well within himself, Daly forged ahead of Frank Donnelly. Aidan Conlon started poorly and never threatened. Daly ran out an easy winner with Frank Donnelly in second.

Patrick Garvey v Seamus Conlon v Eamonn O’Neill:

Conlon started somewhat erratically and brought up the rear from Patrick Garvey and Eamonn O’Neill in second. O’Neill pressed Garvey from Allen’s farm, but was unlucky at Mary Ann’s Corner when his bowl hit “the post” and stopped dead when normally he would have had a full corner. O’Neill still pressured Garvey up the final straight, but Garvey just managed to hold on to win by a yard.

Stephen O’Neill v Joseph Donnelly v Mark Gallagher:

Punters made O’Neill the strong favourite for this score at the start. Stephen O’Neill, bowling unpredictably, was soon in trouble from the steadier Mark Gallagher. O’Neill never really recovered enough to be a threat. Gallagher finished a bit shakily, but held on for a last shot win over Joseph Donnelly, and Stephen O’Neill finished in third.

Danny Trainor v John Lennon v Joe Donnelly:

John Lennon’s steady bowling had his opponents struggling from the start and looked in control all the way. A bad mistake hitting the dead kerb after Mary Ann’s left it anyone’s score. In fact, the leader changed three times between Mary Ann’s corner and the finish. In the end, Donnelly proved to be the stronger, winning on the last shot by mere yards in front of John Lennon and Danny Trainor in third.

This brought an end to an enthralling three weeks of bowling. Tullysaran finally got their hands on the Cup. The trend of home sides doing poorly continued with Tullysaran only winning one score. Eglish can consider themselves as unlucky losers finishing very strongly to take three of the four scores of the weekend. In the end, road bowls was the winner with good sporting competition between all three clubs.

Maurice Rooney v Jim McLaughlin v Paul McVeigh:
Our first representative on the tricky Eglish course was Maurice Rooney who did not shine early on, with Jim McLaughlin making the early running. McLaughlin was to rue missed chances, however, as both Rooney and McVeigh gained in confidence as the score progressed. Rooney finished very strongly, taking a well-earned victory over McVeigh on the last shot.

Score 2
Shane O’Neill snr v Martin Donnelly v Peter Daly:
From a Tullysaran point of view, this was to be the exact opposite of the first score. O’Neill started strongly and forged ahead of Donnelly, with Daly a further shot behind. Mistakes cost O’Neill dearly, however, as he faded over the second half, leaving Daly and Donnelly to fight out the finish. Porto's Donnelly held on for a last shot win.

Score 3
Paddy O’Neill v Frank Oliver v Gerard McVeigh:
A poor second shot from Paddy O’Neill put him in trouble early on, with Oliver and McVeigh, throwing the harder bullets, making the early running. O’Neill’s comeback attempt faltered at the last corner when lady luck deserted him, his second last shot bouncing off the wall, straight across the road. This left Oliver and McVeigh to sort out the spoils between them. Oliver kept his best to the last when his well-played bullet scored the line from the last corner, earning him a last shot victory over McVeigh.

Connor O’Neill v Connor Powell v Patsy Daly:
Eglish struggled in this score, with the non-appearance of Sean Mallon; stand in, Patsy Daly, couldn’t quite match his opponents for speed. O’Neill got the better of the early exchanges and forged ahead with some fast and accurate bowling. Some incredible shots towards the finish left O’Neill in an unassailable position, two shots clear of Powell, with a gallant Daly in third.

This was another fine showing from the Tullysaran lads, taking two more points on a tricky Eglish course, leaving everything finely balanced with the score: Tullysaran 4, Portmor 3, and Eglish 1. We hope the current trend of home side defeats does not continue next week in Tullysaran!

Grade 2:
Aidan Conlon v Stephen O’Neill:
Stephen stamped his authority on the score early on with a big second shot to past McKinney’s. He continued to forge ahead raising a shot at Mullintur and two by the cap. A lack lustre Aidan failed to respond and Stephen kept up his work rate to win by two shots above O’Neill’s.

Grade 1:
Fr. Brian White v Martin Rooney:
A big third shot form Martin set the tone for this score, beating the bridge from well above O’Neill’s, leaving him almost a bowl clear. Fr. Brian recovered enough to give himself a chance by Kilpatrick’s, but another big shot from Martin, opening Mary Ann’s corner, put an end to Fr. Brian’s hopes. Martin ran out a comfortable winner by a shot.

Philip Mallon v Ryan Fay v Martin McGleenan:
A rejuvenated Philip Mallon produced a near flawless display of bowling in the first score. He got the better of the running in the second half, to comfortably beat Ryan Fay on the last shot, with the home sides McGleenan finishing third.

Anthony Rooney v Fintan Daly v Gareth Lavery:
Anthony Rooney started strongly and had both his opponents in trouble when he nearly opened the first corner in three. Gareth Lavery made a strong comeback with good steady bowling, and when Anthony Rooney made two bad mistakes into the Orchard corner, the door was opened for Lavery, who went on to win by a shot, with Eglish’s Fintan Daly last of the trio.

Martin Rooney v Joe McArdle v James McCann:
Eglish’s James McCann showed that he hasn’t lost any of his old flare. Throwing the speedier of the bullets, he raced into an early lead, which he was never to loose. An out of form Martin Rooney never really threatened, Joe McArdle persisted all the way to the line, though McCann won comfortably on the last shot.

Shane O’Neill jnr v Jason Lennon v Sean Donnelly:
Shane O’Neill was very slow to get into his stride while Jason Lennon, throwing steadily, raced into an early lead. Sean Donnelly, carrying an injury, brought up the rear early on. Young Shane stepped up the pace and, bowling with grit and determination, pegged back the lead. Finishing strongly, Shane threw four great shots from the Long Lane to near the line to seal the victory. Sean Donnelly recovered somewhat to take second place for Eglish, with Jason Lennon coming in third.

This was an excellent start for Tullysaran in the prestigious Inter Club Competition. Two wins and a second place away from home and some very good performances see Tullysaran going into next weeks encounter in Eglish in a healthy position. The Eglish contingent will be hard to beat on their home ground, while Portmor will be determined to recover from their poor showing at home. All is still to play for with the score: Tullysaran 2, Eglish 1, and Portmor 1.

On the News front this weekend (4th-5th March 2006) sees a busy time for the Tullysaran Lads. We have the first and second grade finals on Saturday and the beginning of the Top Twelve tournement between ourselves, and the clubs of Port Mor and Eglish.

Grade Finals
First grade - The first grade final pits Fr Brian White against Martin (Sam) Rooney. Fr Brian will be looking to make it second time lucky as he was beat in the Final of First Grade last time round. On Sunday morning, he beat the ever speedy Conor O'Neill with an outstanding start which seen him taking 6 shots to leave him a look at the straight from the top of Mullintor. 3 more into the cap seen him hold a shot of a lead round the bends to Tobys lane. But then a couple of loose shots up the hill towards the line seen him surrender his lead very tamely to leave him 2 yards hind in the last corner. But a great last shot to just short of the lane, scoring the line in the process, and doing enough to win will have done his confidance the world of good. Sam Rooney is another thrower who's confidance will be sky high after defeating Senior thrower Conor McGuigan on the last shot back down in the second semi-final on Sunday morning. Despite not making the best of his shot advantage, Sam battled right to the end managing to hold on to McGuigans shirt tails to Mary Anns, where a poor throw from the Senior man, gave him the the chance he needed to take him into Saturdays Final. With both throwers seemly hitting form at the right time, it looks like were in for a cracking score to get the weekend under way.

Second grade - The Second grade final will see Adain Conlon take on Stephen O'Neill. Conlon will be making his 4 appearance in the final without having won it yet. He will be hoping for lady luck to finally shine on him come Saturday afternoon, having done enough to beat Shane O'Neill (snr) back down on Sunday afternoon. He was a touch unfortunate with his last throw, as it caught the dead curb just short of the line at the Chapel gates. Shane then threw a great last shot from the point road, catching at the top of the hill leaving Conlon a short but tricky shot to win the score. Stephen O'Neill will be out to topple Conlon on Saturday after watching him beat his Uncle Shane. Stephen peformed well on Sunday afternoon in the first score after dinner beating an unlucky Eddie Mallon by 2 shots. It was a disappointing performance by Mallon, but O'Neill must take credit for throwing all the big shots when needed.

Top Twelve
This Sunday sees the start of the Top Twelve competition between Eglish, Port Mor and ourselves, beginning with the first 4 scores on the Port Mor course from the village out. The days throwing kicks off at 11am. Port Mor will be out to retain their crown for the third successive year, although their challange it seems his taken a blow before a bowl has being thrown with the withdrawl of Gareth Corr. The blow was softened a slight bit with the news that Rossi Powell will be taking his place. Eglish will be hoping to steal back the title of Top Twelve Champions following a couple of lack luster performance in the last couple of years. Tullysaran will hope to get their hands on the Trophy for the first time in many years. Having won the inagural comprtition, they have managed to disappoint each year since, with all their top guns seeming unable to perform on the day. They will have being boosted though by their near white wash over Tieve Tara back at christmas, winning the Wolly Toms Cup for the second time in 3 years with an 8-1 score line.
